Who is the Cuenta Propia Visa for?
This visa is suitable for self-employed specialists, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who are ready to provide a detailed business plan and prove that their activity will generate sufficient income to live in the country.
Main Requirements for Obtaining a Cuenta Propia
The consulate evaluates applications based on three key criteria. If even one is poorly prepared, there is a high risk of refusal.
- Detailed business plan: You must prove the economic viability of your project. The plan should include activity description, market analysis, expected client base, and projected income and expenses for the first 2 years.
- Financial viability: There is no strict legal threshold for this visa, but consulates usually focus on references close to NLV requirements, that is 400% of the monthly IPREM for a year. You must show sufficient projected income or savings for the initial period.
- Professional qualification: Your profile must match the proposed business. A relevant university degree or documented work experience in the field of at least 3 years is required.
Required Documents and Preparation
Documents must be no older than 3 months. Foreign certificates and diplomas require apostille and sworn translation into Spanish.
- International passport: Valid for at least 12 months, issued no more than 10 years ago, with at least 2 blank pages. Certified copies of all pages are required.
- Business plan: A detailed document with financial projections for 2 years and market analysis.
- Financial guarantees: Bank statements, active client contracts, invoices from prior freelance activity, or letters of intent from future clients.
- Qualification: University degree (apostilled and translated) or professional certificates and employment contracts confirming 3 years of experience.
- Medical insurance: A private policy from a company authorized in Spain, with full coverage, no co-payments, and no waiting periods, for 1 year.
- Police clearance and medical certificates: Police clearance from countries lived in during the last 5 years, plus a medical certificate confirming no dangerous diseases.
Step-by-Step Timeline: How to Get the Visa
Unlike Digital Nomad Visa or Highly Qualified Professional visas, you cannot apply for a Cuenta Propia while in Spain.
- Preparation: Gather the full package of documents, especially the business plan and financial guarantees.
- Submission to the consulate: Submit the application in person at the Spanish consulate in your country of legal residence and pay the consular fee.
- Waiting for a decision: Standard processing time is usually 1 to 3 months.
- Entry to Spain: If approved, receive the visa, enter Spain during its validity period, and begin legalization.
What to Do Immediately After Entering Spain
For Cuenta Propia holders, relocation is tightly linked with tax and social security registration. You have 30 days after entry to complete key steps.
- Autonomo registration: Register in RETA with Social Security (TGSS) from day one of professional activity. Also file Form 036 or 037 with AEAT. Check eligibility for tarifa plana in the first 2 years.
- Empadronamiento and TIE: Register at the local city hall and book fingerprint appointment (Cita Previa) within 30 days to obtain TIE.
- Public healthcare: By contributing to RETA, you gain access to public healthcare. Go to the local health center to obtain TSI.
- Taxes: As an autonomo, set up quarterly filings including Form 130 and Form 303. By June 30 of the following year, file annual return (IRPF, Modelo 100).
- Digital tools: Obtain and install digital certificate (FNMT), set up Cl@ve, and open a Spanish bank account for ongoing filings and operations.
